Korean Boys' Love (BL) Dramas to Watch Before the End of the Year

Continuing from our previous post If you haven't read "The Popularity of Korean BL Dramas is Rising," you should. It discusses how the global popularity of Korean BL shows is increasing. Today we will compile a list of Korean BL series to watch. This isn't a best-of list, but it does include the shows we enjoy watching.

1. Semantic Error

Chu Sang Woo personifies rigidity and adherence to rules. In Chu Sang Woo's perfect world, Jang Jae Young is like a semantic error. Will Sang Woo be able to collaborate with Jae Young as an artist and engineer?

Short and sweet, easy to binge, and extremely cute. This warmed my heart because the risks were so low and there was no struggle with sexuality, homophobia, or any other aspect of the show. It's just two guys who are attracted to each other.

2. Cherry Blossoms After Winter

Cherry Blossoms Before Winter Korean BL Show
The death of his parents forces a seven-year-old boy named Seo Hae Bom to move in with an adoptive family who have a young son of the same age named Jo Tae Seong. Seo Hae Bom is in awe of Jo Tae Seong – he considers the boy to be everything that he is not: tall, handsome, popular, caring, and worthy of love and attention. The diminutive Seo Hae Bom thinks himself inferior and is humbled by the kindness of the family that took him in.

Things become slightly different for the duo, however, after Seo Hae Bom and Jo Tae Seong end up in the same high school class. All of a sudden, they are spending more time than ever together at home and at school. An unexpected romantic spark ignites between the two – but what will Cupid have to say about all this?

There was nothing to be upset about in the show, and I liked how things were going. It was soothing and relaxing.

3. Oh! Boarding House

Soul-won lost every penny of the 100 million won that his mom lent. And to make matters worse, he gets fired from his job. His mom forgave him on condition that he hand over her job as running a boarding house. Then she left for a trip overseas. All of a sudden, Soul-won becomes the owner of the boarding house. From the very first day, a great deal of trouble happens. Wang Ye-min who is so sensitive that he complains all the time makes Soul-won feel uncomfortable. On top of that, Soul-won’s cousin, Jae-woo is mean to him in all respects. How come a new border doesn’t show up late at night? And, the new boarder knocks out a sneak thief cold and astonishingly appears in the long run…. Five men starts living together in the Fifth Boarding House this way!

I had a great time watching this. It was lighthearted, funny, endearing, and only a few minutes long. I'd like to see another season of it. In a short eight-episode series, I thought the actors did an excellent job portraying their characters.

4. To My Star

The love story between actor Kang Seo-joon, who deviates from the traditional route, and chef Han Ji-woo, who doesn’t want to deviate from the straight path. It’s a romance-boosting story that claims to be a type of drama that’s never been seen before.

The cinematography is excellent; I enjoyed every episode because of how bright it felt. The series' energy was matched by the cinematography. It's absolutely stunning. The acting is excellent. I liked how natural it felt; it didn't feel forced at all.

5. The Director Who Buys Me Dinner

Hundreds of years ago, a child was named after god and was cursed. After 4 reincarnations he finds his love in the form of an employee of his company, a man! If they don't date, they die!

"We have to date. If we don't, we die."

Dong Baek is one of the newest employees at Min Entertainment. His director, Yu Dam, is absolutely perfect in every way. Yet, Dong Baek thinks his director has lost his mind... What do you mean the director has lived three lives and because of that he wants to date? What's going on?
